The American Bar

65 Dock St, Belfast BT15 1LF, United Kingdom
What We Offer:
Dating back to the 1860’s the pub has always been called The American. Why exactly we don’t know but being on Belfast’s dockside it would have had links to the Americas through shipping, trade and emigration, not least during the Irish famine of the mid 1800’s. Historically the pub would have been frequented by dockers, carters and riveters… truly the hard men of Belfast. Sailortown is also the home of the legendry Belfast boxer Rinty Monaghan, an undisputed world champion in the 1940’s. His photograph along with other Belfast champions fill the back wall. This new chapter commenced in October 2016 and the pub is once more alive with impromptu music sessions, poetry and gigs over two floors. The walls are adorned with both Sailortown and American photographs and paraphernalia – car number plates, boxers, scarfs, beer signs and mirrors

So good to be back and there’s been changes! A beer garden out the back doubling the space, a kitchen so that they now provide food from 4pm Thursday to Saturdays. Still able to bring our food in from Benny’s Cafe next door. Great pints. Really chatty staff as always and a regular Friday hub for the workers.
A real gem within Belfast, a little off the beaten track but you won’t be disappointed. Live music at the weekends with food at the rear plus beer garden. Definitely value for money which is hard to find these days and the pints of Guinness are second to none.
What a great place. Upstairs is a small intimate friendly space, ideal for listening to live bands playing righteous sounds. Last week featured the magnificent Villiers and the villains. The perfect venue for a perfect Saturday afternoon scoop or two. Highly recommended. Try the Guinness.

I really like love and death, always worth a visit if I’m at a social gathering in Belfast. The cocktail menu isn’t nearly as extensive as it used to be. This, for me, is a downfall. However, still a good bar to visit.
Love this bar, the cocktails are amazing, this was my first time back since lockdown and the cocktails didn’t disappoint! Long Island ice tea and a zombie – rocket fuel but delicious.
Really friendly bar staff. Great service. Good cocktails at a reasonable price. The best is the top floor bands which we have seen the last two days. Great music and not so loud that you cannot hear a thing. Jazz funk band last night and light rock duo tonight and both great. We were early so got in for free and it got busy after an hour.

Quiet on a Saturday afternoon but filled up after 6pm. Table service was being provided in the afternoon. Not sure if they do food. Toilets are unisex which I’m not a fan of in a pub as they’re usually not very clean later on at night.
Great venue for intimate music events where you can focus in on the music. Good seating with a bar area to the side.
Great bar, basic setup but very enjoyable. The bouncer was especially outside when I was vaping. Full of chat. Highly recommended.
